Kootenay Co-op Radio in Nelson, BC is hiring four AVOC project contributors who will work in two teams of two. They will be supervised by the Production Training Coordinator, and will work closely with the Project Outreach Coordinator.
COMPENSATION: This is a contract position, and each participant will receive a $1,500 honorarium upon successful completion of their work.
Current Kootenay Co-op Radio volunteers are encouraged to apply, although volunteer status is not a requirement.
Start date for the first project team: (approx): June 12, 2017
End date for the first project team: (approx) Nov 10, 2017
Start date for second project team: (approx): Oct 16, 2017
End date for second project team: (approx): March 16, 2018
Knowledge of, and interest in, current affairs and local news in the West Kootenay region
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral 
Listening skills
Research analysis and presentation skills
Time management skills
Ability to multi-task efficiently
Ability to work well independently and collaboratively
Ability to work effectively under tight production deadlines
Desire to learn new technical skills, including sound recording and sound editing techniques
Ability to work with a diverse group of volunteers
Excellent computer proficiency
Community radio or independent media experience or interest
Other journalistic experience
The Project Contributors (PCs) selected will work in teams of two and learn fundamental journalism skills, gaining experience in technical, creative, and journalistic aspects of creating radio documentaries at Kootenay Co-op Radio in Nelson, B.C.
PCs will receive training and support from experienced local journalists and radio technicians in these areas:
how to produce a radio documentary
journalism ethics, plagiarism, and the importance of fact-checking
telephone, field, and studio interviewing techniques
studio and field recording equipment and techniques
microphone techniques
sound editing and sound design
Together each PC team will meet with their support team bi-weekly, and together will research, plan and produce 12  30-minute radio documentaries within 24 weeks (6 documentaries per contributor) focused on local non-profit organizations, their history and mandates, and the ways they contribute to a healthy community.
