Kootenay Coop Radio is seeking full and part-time reporters to join our local and regional news production team. KCR is excited to be participating in the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) Program which is dedicated to fostering creation of original civic journalism. Our reporters will cover local politics, arts and culture, business, and other subjects of public importance and community interest in all areas of our broadcast region. News content will be produced for broadcast and digital format. KCR is seeking creative, motivated, organized, professional reporters with a passion for community. We offer an opportunity to hone your journalistic craft with the backing of supportive colleagues and a great team.
Here’s what we are looking for:
-A university degree or technical diploma in Arts, Journalism, Communications, or Broadcasting from an accredited educational institution
-Two or more years of experience in broadcasting and/or print journalism
-Strong on-air interviewing skills
-Audio and video production skills in both field and studio applications
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills and understanding of the Canadian Press Style Guide
-A talent for news gathering and an understanding of community journalism
-The ability to work as part of an editorial team
-The ability to work independently to research, write, edit, and present local news stories
-Understanding of Canadian journalistic ethics, defamation, copyright, and broadcasting regulations and laws
-Leadership qualities to impart your skills and experience to our staff and volunteers
-Capacity to post content on social media and blogging platforms
-Familiarity with KCR’s broadcasting communities would be advantageous
-An affinity for mountain towns and mountain culture
-A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are essential
TERM: 15-35 hours per week starting April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027. Renewal of term will depend upon available funding
RATE OF PAY: $30 / hour (non-negotiable)
