Kootenay Savings Music in The Park in Trail – Petunia and the Vipers

July 7 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

On July 7 the Kootenay Savings Music in the Park Night Market welcomes the genre hopping music of Petunia and the Vipers at 7 pm to Gyro Park in Trail. Organized by Trail & District Arts Council, in partnership with Trail’s incrEDIBLE Farmer’s Market, join us for a fun evening of food vendors, market, beer & wine garden from 5-8.30 pm!

Petunia and the Vipers are described as hillbilly-flavoured-swing inflected-ragtime. Their goodtime one-of-a-kind show has been described as ‘Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s Hobo junction’ or imagine that David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby, that yodeled. These are just a few of the words uttered by folks around the globe trying to pin down a description of all that is Petunia and the Vipers.

Forming the musical foundation of the band are two touring vets who deal out fiery solos and lush arrangements. Stephen Nikleva on electric guitar is a former member of Ray Condo and the Ricochets fame, while lapsteel guitar virtuoso Jimmy Roy has played with Wanda Jackson, and Big Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys, among others.

Opening for Petunia & the Vipers will be the gritty and soulful Canadian roots music of The Judy Brown Band at 6:15 pm. Judy is a Canadian roots music singer, songwriter, and guitarist, influenced by the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, and Muddy Waters. She began in Alberta before moving to Toronto.

The last Kootenays Savings Music in the Park of the year is a fiddle fiesta as the classic fiddle of The Golden City Fiddlers meets the acoustic chamber folk with an otherworldly edge of the Raine Hamilton Trio on Sept 1.

Executive Director, Nadine Tremblay, explains, “These events play a critical role in restoring audience confidence, boosting tourism, and stimulating the local and performing arts economy as we work towards recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have a fabulous lineup of local and touring groups this season and I hope everyone in this region, as well as visitors, come see us often this Summer for a fun, safe, and affordable night out.”

Kootenay Savings Music in the Park is held at Trail’s Gyro Park every Thursday starting at 6.15 pm, except for the Night Market shows on July 7 and August 4 when the event will run from 5 pm. Come down and feel the buzz again at these fabulous outdoor summer events.

Admission is by donation at the door- $3 minimum suggested. Or show your support for the arts and buy a pass for the whole season for just $50 online, at the box office or in person at Music in the Park.

With entrance by donation, Kootenay Savings Music in the Park is the perfect opportunity to bring a lawn chair or a blanket, pack a picnic, hit the water park, get outside and listen to live music with friends and family.
