Mark your calendar! Kootenay Co-op Radio invites you to its BLOCK PARTY on Saturday, May 28 at the Lions Park from 3pm to 8pm.
There is something for everyone at this community/family friendly FREE event. After two years of strict restrictions around gatherings, it’s time to reunite with this community we love and who support us.
PROGRAM:
3pm: opening
3:15pm: LVJ5, a jazz band made up of five students from L. V Rogers High School in Nelson
What a pleasure to have Aaron, Tamias, Jade, Jake, Nico and Krispen at the Kootenay Co-op Block Party! These very talented musicians are between the ages of 16 and 17 and attend L.V Rogers High School in Nelson. During the one-hour show, host Antoine Bonaparte asked them about their influences and their musical journey. In the 2020/21 school year they were led by trumpeter Michael Perkins and recorded a CD, as there were no options for live performances. For the 2021/22 school year, they were joined by Krispen on saxophone.
The band rehearses once a week after school and is eager to perform live for jazz-loving listeners and dancers.
4pm: Hurrie Brown & Walker (Blues Trio)
What an honor to have Sam Hurrie, Judy Brown and Don Walker with their Roots and Blues Trio!
Sam Hurrie took up the guitar at age 12 and soon discovered blues and the musicians who performed it. He has played all over Canada, the US and Europe, and now lives and performs in the Kootenays.
Judy Brown is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose musical journey began in Edmonton before moving to Toronto and now lives and performs in Nelson. Her 2018 debut album “Say It” includes the song “Roberta” which was nominated for a 2019 Kootenay Music Award.
Don Walker is a veteran drummer, strummer and singer with extensive experience performing in over 100 countries. Now based in Nelson, he has recently performed with Rob Rowan, Roxy, Rippin’ Rattlers, Alan Kirk, Son of John, Holly and Jon and The Judy Brown Band.
Together, Hurrie Brown & Walker deliver heartfelt roots and blues music and you’ll find them performing at the Balfour Beach Inn every Saturday starting at 5pm.
5pm: The Latin Lovers (Latin music band) and latin dance performances with Fabiola from The Orange Bridge Dance
The Latin Lovers play music from all over Latin America with different instruments and rhythms. With a mix of original songs and covers, these beats make you dance. They are a collective of enthusiastic, multicultural, musicians, holding the art of music in our souls and giving from our hearts to the world. They can’t wait to see on the dance floor!
Fabiola from Orange Bridge Dance has teamed up with Latin Lovers to bring you Latin dances and teach you some of them!
7pm -8pm: CHIMP IT (Hybrid Electronic DJ/Live Performance)
We are thrilled to wrap up the day with CHIMP IT. Blending the richness of cutting edge electronic music with the depth and emotion of live vocals and blistering guitar licks.
Far from a standard DJ performance, CHIMP IT spends days on end editing and re-mixing their favourite sounds from all genres. Drawing upon their extensive experience in various bands and DJ scenes, they incorporate original material into each show to great reception.
