Like so many other great local organizations, Kootenay Co-op Radio runs on volunteer power.
Volunteers built this station from the ground up, and continue to operate it today. They program and host shows, organize our events, serve on committees, maintain the building and gear, and keep the place humming along.
It’s a huge amount of work to deliver such an eclectic programming schedule. All told it takes over 100 volunteers to make KCR happen. Some put in a few hours per week, some put in a few dozen. So why do they do it? Everybody has their own reasons, but ultimately it comes down to passion. Passion for music, or current affairs, or simply serving their community.
The result is that you got to listen to top notch radio that taps right into the soul of the West Kootenay. This is what we mean when we talk about “radio from the heart.”
Despite the colossal effort of our volunteers, we still need your help. Nelson Hydro doesn’t take passion as payment for our hydro bill, nor does the bank when the mortgage is due. For that we need money.
That being said, we don’t need much. KCR runs on about $120,000 per year, which is peanuts for a radio station that operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. To make that, we generate revenue through sponsorships, grants, and of donations to the station from the community.
This year we are looking to raise $25,000 from you, our listeners. For less than 20 cents per day, you can support independent media in the West Kootenay. That’s right. 20 cents per say.
Annual memberships are available for as low as $60. Or you can choose monthly subscription, for as little as $5.50. Or if you can afford more (or less), we would encourage you to pay what you can. We appreciate donations of any amount!
