NELSON, B.C–The 28-year-old Nelson police officer who perished following an avalanche in Kaslo on January 9 was remembered this week as a positive, caring and dedicated officer.
On Monday, a celebration of life was held for Mathieu Nolet, who passed away last week from the injuries he sustained while out on a backcountry ski trip with another Nelson police officer, 43-year-old Wade Tittemore. Friends and relatives, as well as a large gathering of police officers were in attendance.
“Your son has been a pleasure to work with,” Nelson police chief Donovan Fisher told the family at the funeral, which was broadcasted through Facebook. “He is a true gentleman, and everything i think a police officer should be.”
The death of the two officers has rendered nationwide attention, amid an unusually active avalanche season.
