A Nelson police officer is dead, and another in critical condition after being struck by an avalanche near Kaslo on Monday, Nelson Police department announced on Monday evening.
According to the statement, the two officers were on snowmobiles when the incident occurred.
“The Nelson Police Board, the City of Nelson, and the Nelson Police Department offer their condolences and support to the families at this time,” Nelson Police said in the statement.
More information will be released in the coming days, the statement announced.
Just weeks ago, one of Nelson’s most experience backcountry guides said in an interview with KCR News that this season was rife with avalanche activity, and warned outdoor enthusiasts to stay out of the backcountry. You can hear that interview here.
