Never before have people had so much choice when it comes to media variety. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, local media outlets everywhere are struggling as small town newspapers and radio stations reduce staff and services and close their doors.
When this happens, communities lose out. Local stories don’t reach the public, organizations can’t get the word out about events they are planning, and governments operate without proper scrutiny. We are poorer, both politically, and culturally as a result.
We think that ensuring the 60,000+ souls living in the West Kootenay have access to news and cultural commentary is vitally important. To shed perspective, Kootenay Co-op Radio provides a forum for discussion, and analysis of current affairs. From environmental and social issues to pop culture and the arts, KCR’s spoken word programming plays an essential role in helping people share their stories.
Kootenay Morning is as indispensable as that morning cup of coffee when it comes to what’s happening around the region. Without it, many organizations and causes wouldn’t get the opportunity to share their stories with the community. The Ecocentric keeps you up to date on environmental issues, both local and global. And our recent Amplifying Voices of Our Community documentary series provides incredible insight into the individuals and groups working to make the West Kootenay a better place to live for everyone.
All of the work to deliver these programs is done by volunteers, so the actual cost per program is peanuts, BUT there is still a cost. We maintain a tiny staff, and have a mortgage and bills to pay, all of which add up to a total annual budget of just over $120,000 per year.
To hit this target, we absolutely need civic minded members of the community to step up and invest in KCR. This year’s goal is $25,000. Are you prepared to help us reach it? For as little as $5.50 per month, you can play a huge role in supporting our mission. Or maybe you’d like to make a one-time annual donation of $60. Or more. Or less! Whatever you can donate, helps.
