Dance Educators' Showcase

The Nelson & District Arts Council is thrilled to announce the return of the Dance Educators' Showcase on Saturday, November 16th at 7:30 PM. This highly anticipated event spotlights the incredible dance educators in Nelson and area, giving them the opportunity to shine in the spotlight after countless hours spent nurturing their students' growth.
For one night only, these talented instructors (and some students as well) will come together for a rare performance that showcases their artistry, passion, and dedication to dance. Audiences will be treated to a wide range of styles and performances, highlighting the creativity and expertise that these educators bring to our community.
What makes this showcase even more special? All profits from ticket sales will directly fund bursaries for local dance students, ensuring that those facing financial barriers can still access quality dance education. These bursaries will be shared among the participating schools and studios, helping the next generation of dancers pursue their dreams.

Halfway There: a play by Norm Foster

Taghum Hall is thrilled to partner with Pat Henman Productions to present Halfway There, in which friends Vi, Rita, Mary Ellen, and Janine—who meet for coffee every day and know everybody’s business—catch wind of a new arrival: Sean, a heartbroken doctor, who is about to tip the town off its axis.That's when we find out there’s no such thing as a secret in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia. Starring Lindsay Clague, Robyn Lamb, Sydney Black, Avi Phillips, and Pat Henman, who is also co-director with Eva Myers-McKimm, this is a play that will have you laughing 'til your sides ache and crying 'til your heart breaks, according to one reviewer. Performances are November 14, 15, 16 at 7:30 with a matinee on Saturday November 16 at 2pm.

Noémi Kiss and Friends

Noémi Kiss teams up with pianist, Paticia Tao, and Nelson instrumentalists, Natasha Hall
(violin) and Rob Fahie (double bass). Listeners will embark on a journey spanning centuries,
with compositions by Mozart, Liszt, Poulenc, and Satie, as well as Hungarian folk music,
Noémi's cultural heritage. Elements of jazz, folk and classical music, delving into themes of
love, beauty, belonging and loss will be at the evening’s heart.

Led by an artist who really knows her way around a sewing machine, Christmas Crafts with Bernadette LaBrie, teaches participants how to create beautiful table and tree decorations in plenty of time for the holidays. Some basic sewing experience is all that’s needed; materials are provided. NOVEMBER 2 and 9, 9am - noon, $30/session or $50 for both. Register for one or both sessions at www.taghumhall.ca.

Contra Dancing

Contra dancing is a community social dance that has its origins in England, Scotland and France made popular in the US.

We dance to live music – Irish, Scottish and French-Canadian tunes played by talented musicians. A caller walks through the moves and prompts the figures during the dance.

Contra dance is appropriate for all ages if you can walk briskly and follow directions independently. You don't need to bring a partner. It is customary to change partners during the evening. Bring comfortable layered clothes, water bottle, indoor shoes.

We dance at Taghum Hall 6:30-7pm introductory class/ 7-9 dance  $15/adults $10/youth   Next dances: Friday Oct. 25 and Friday Nov. 29

Dirt Floor released EP Wyoming Winds

Dirt Floor - Wyoming Winds

Acclaimed band Dirt Floor from Nelson, B.C. will be releasing their third album Wyoming Winds on Thursday July  27th at 9am PST. With 2023 being the 10th Anniversary of the band, they are firmly entrenched as Roots/Country  regional favourites, still on the rise. 

The 7-track collection was recorded at Sincerity Sound Studio in Appledale, B.C. over the last couple of years and is  the follow up and companion piece to Dirt Floor's 2022 release, the monumental Rosie Blue.  

"It's been such an incredible last couple of years" says multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Peter Reed. "With the  release of Rosie Blue there has been such a huge upswell of support which is very validating as artists. Our goal as  songwriters is to draw the audience into the nuances of our songwriting which is at the heart of the Dirt Floor sound".  

"I think Wyoming Winds is our best album yet and shows off the versatility of the band and our take on contemporary  songwriting. It is really an album about relationships, loss and the search for understanding of the current emotional  climate in the world".  

The album features the core Dirt Floor team of Sean Cameron, Peter Reed, Jesse Lee and Steve Brockley with guest  appearances and support from Alissa Arnason on Vocals, Matt Kelly on pedal steel (City and Colour) Geoff Hillhorst  on keys (The Deep Dark Woods) and local Kootenay horn hero Clinton Swanson.  

The album swings between the deep groove of the opening track Front Porch Cookdown to the deep historical  ballads of the title track Wyoming Winds and Susannah and Earle. The songwriting talents of Cameron and Reed are  firmly on show as they cover the ground effortlessly dissecting subject matter that is accessible to all. The subject  matter focuses on relationships and our role in them.  

The band will be premiering the album at StarBelly Jam Festival in Crawford Bay on July 29th and continuing the  release the following weekend at the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival where they will be playing the legendary Floating Stage  amongst the likes of The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Elephant Revival and Hiss Golden Messenger.
