Fundraiser "Holding Liat" Academy Award nominee first in Palestine-Israel film series
Kootenay Friends of Standing Together presents “Holding Liat” as a fundraiser for the Protect the Harvest campaign to support West Bank olive farmers this fall. The film is a 2026 Academy Award short-listed Best Documentary Feature.
The Film: Liat Atzili and her husband are kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023. The film follows Liat’s Jewish family’s fight for their release while struggling to come to terms with the horrific violence of the Hamas attack and the disproportional horrendous Israeli military response carried out in the name of the Israeli victims. Liat’s father sees the fight as part of a broader struggle against endless war and Netanyahu’s opportunism and for an enduring political settlement between Israelis and Palestinians, reflecting that Netanyahu and his government are not representative of all Israelis. Liat’s father will be providing a video update to Nelson. Please come for a riveting evening that will leave you thinking, and with the knowledge you’ve supported Palestinian olive farmers.

About the movie: An inspiring documentary chronicling the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the frontlines, whose stories weave through the most vibrant, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history - the First Intifada in the late 1980s. The film is entirely subtitled and rated PG 14 for language and violence.
