SROAMazing Race
Time Travelers Unite for the SROAMazing Race at Whitewater
NELSON—Dig out the vintage onesies, neon windbreakers and Y2K tracksuits, Whitewater Ski Resort is taking a trip back in time for the annual SROAMazing Race.
Hosted by students in the Ski Resort Operations & Management (SROAM) Program at Selkirk College, the SROAMazing Race will take place on March 21 at Whitewater Ski Resort, bringing together teams of four competitors for an afternoon of fun on the mountain. Whether you’re a family looking for a day filled with adventures or a group of friends ready to compete, the retro-themed race is filled with exciting challenges and awesome prizes.
The event starts with registration at 12 pm at the Whitewater base area, followed by the race start at 1 pm. Teams will compete until 3 pm, finishing the day with prizes and a raffle at 3:30 pm.
“The SROAMazing Race is all about having fun, getting creative and bringing people together,” says Ben Utterly, a first-year student in the SROAM Program. “And let’s be honest, it’s the perfect excuse to bring back some iconic fashion trends.”
Based out of the Tenth Street Campus in Nelson, the two-year SROAM Program covers all aspects of ski resort operations, providing learners a unique blend of management skills and industry knowledge to prepare graduates for lasting leadership roles. The only program of its kind in Canada, since 1980 it has been a vital training ground for the outdoor industry.
For this year’s annual event, teams of four will embark on a journey across Whitewater terrain, solving clues, completing tasks and overcoming challenges. Each checkpoint will test a different set of skills, from teamwork to puzzle-solving. Categories for prizes include first to cross the finish line, best costumes and luckiest teams.
“This is more than just a race, it’s a community gathering where everyone can embrace the fun and celebrate ski culture in a unique way,” says event organizer and SROAM first-year student Carson Field. “We can't wait to see participants dive into the theme, push their limits and carve through the snow.”
Pre-register for the event by visiting the SROAMazing Race Facebook page or emailing rmitz@selkirk.ca. If you pre-register for the race by March 18 the cost is $10 per person and registration on the day of the event is $15 per person. All funds being raised from the event will be donated to the Team Giver Foundation, supporting the youth in the winter sports community.

Nelson Leafs coach steps down, team to pay $5,000 fine after on-ice brawl
By John Rune, KCR News
Nelson Leafs head coach Adam DiBella has announced he is stepping down from the job permanently, after facing a suspension by the KIJHL for the remainder of the season.
The decision comes after Saturday's line brawl between players from the Leafs and their opponent Beaver Valley Nitehawks, which sparked an investigation into DiBellas role in the incident.
“Our investigation determined that the incident in Saturday’s game was instigated by the Leafs at Mr. DiBella’s direction,” says KIJHL commissioner Jeff Dubois. “The KIJHL has zero tolerance for these types of actions by any team staff member, and the severity of Mr. DiBella’s suspension reflects the seriousness that we place on leadership and player safety.”
KCR News was not able to reach DiBella for comment, but in a statement to the Nelson Star, DiBella said he was embarrassed over his actions, which put 10 players at risk.
The team will be under temporary leadership by Assistant Coach Tyson Soobotin and General Manager Lance Morey.
'It's upsetting and pretty disappointing'–KIJHL Commissioner Jeff DuBois speaks to KCR News about the decision to suspend Leafs coach
Local man fights to get covered bus shelter outside Nelson hospital
'It can be pretty brutal' – Phil Mader tells KCR News about what hospital commuters can be forced to deal with
A Nelson man says the lack of an enclosed bus shelter outside Kootenay Lake Hospital is leaving patients and Uphill commuters with no protection against chilly winds.
"When people who are unwell leave the hospital and need to use the bus, if there is sub-zero temperatures, it can be pretty brutal," Phil Mader said. "Especially some people don't always dress properly for winter, so that is pretty evident."
Mader, who lives near the hospital and often commutes from the bus stop outside the hospital, said he has been working to get the attention of local stakeholders such as the hospital foundation and MLA Brittny Anderson for over a year, and while his voice is being heard, little is happening. He has also approached the city, which he thinks should do more to give commuters some shelter from the cold.
"I have to say that the city is now embarking on projects to improve public transit. My hat is off to them, but my hope is that they are going to put more effort into it."
City councillor Rik Logtenberg confirmed that the city has been approached about the issue, and that there 'is an intention' to go through with the plans, but that the grant application which would be used for the purpose of installing a covered bus shelter was complicated over jurisdictional issues on who can, and should install a shelter.
