This duo highlights the delicate balance between sound and silence, presence and absence, as the tar and santur intertwine in a musical dialogue. In "MA", the space between notes, much like the space between people, holds meaning, fostering a sense of connection that transcends individual expression. The interplay of the tar’s resonant strings and the santur’s shimmering tones form a conversation that invites listeners to experience both the sound and the silence, the individual and the collective. Together they create a space where Persian tradition and contemporary expression converge, celebrating the power of unity and the beauty found in the spaces between.

Amir Amiri is a Santur player, composer, and cultural inventor. A CBC Artist of the Year (2003), Amir performs and tours regularly with a vast spectrum of ensembles, enchanting with his signature down-to-earth style and connection with audiences. He dwells at the centre of a unique musical universe where ancient inspiration, dazzling virtuosity, and bold creativity meet. He has composed the soundtrack for Matthew Rankin's film Universal Language, which was short-listed to represent Canada at the Oscars 2025 and won the Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes Festival 2024. His latest album Ajdad / Ancestors : Echoes of Persia has been at the top of world music charts since last September.

Elham Manoucheri is a master of several traditional Persian instruments such as Tar, Setar, Shourangiz, and Robab. She has collaborated with a variety of musicians from multiple backgrounds and performed across Canada. Most notably, Elham performed repertoire dedicated to Persian culture with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 2023. As the co-founder and singer of the DIBA collective upon her arrival in Montreal in 2014, she has since immersed herself in the city's cultural fabric and cultivated her musical talents. Elham is supported by the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Andrew Collins Trio - Live At The Langham

Mando maestro Andrew Collins finds himself – through no actual fault of his own – at the epicentre of Canada’s acoustic/roots music scene. He didn’t invent it – but he’s certainly been a major contributor, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking Tree String Quartet, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and, more recently, his namesake Trio. That’s not to mention the fact that this prolific, robust performer – comfortable on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello – composes, produces, arranges, writes and teaches across multiple genres, including an electrifying fusion of folk, acoustic roots, newgrass and even a dash of chamber where warranted.

As Collins gathers up innumerable JUNO nominations (5) and Canadian Folk Music Awards (7) won by his various ensembles, he’s zeroing in on the work he does with Trio-mates:  fellow string guru Adam Shier, whose versatility shines through on guitar and mandolin, and in-the-pocket James McEleney holding it down on the bass, mandocello and vocals.

Showcasing a dizzying number of styles and instruments on stage, Collins and Co. appear to live by the old adage, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, likely keeping them just ahead of his grasp. Bending and blending genres, these musical shape shifters land somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck, Newgrass invader David Grisman and the legendary Yo Yo Ma!

The Trio recently released their aptly titled album, “The Rule of Three”, drawing inspiration from the literary principle that a trio of elements is more impactful, intricately weaving together visual and literary art’s “rule of thirds. The album was, serendipitously enough, nominated for 3 Canadian Folk Music Awards!

Here at The Langham on March 1st, they’re releasing “Retro”, a treasure trove of Andrew’s signature tracks over the years with fresh arrangements and spirited trio interplay. From blazing bluegrass to jazzy waltzes and classical reinterpretations, Retro shows that great music evolves through honouring its roots.
