Lutes in the Koots!
Step back in time with Nelson Guitar Festival guest artist Kat Hammer and explore the fascinating world of early plucked instruments in a unique and interactive workshop!
Kat will present a stunning collection of rare and beautiful instruments, including:
- 7-course Renaissance lute
- 13-course Baroque lute
- Italian Baroque guitar
- French Baroque guitar
- 14-course Baroque Theorbo (over 2 metres long!)
Each instrument has its own story, sound, and stunning craftsmanship. You'll learn about their history and construction, hear them brought to life in live performance, and even have the chance to try them yourself!

Early plucked instrument specialist Kat Hammer and virtuoso classical guitarist Brett Gunther take the stage for the closing concert of the Nelson Guitar Festival. Expect enchanting music from the Renaissance and Baroque and stunning contemporary works!
Nelson Guitar Festival: Emma Rush/Michael Kolk
Two of Canada's finest guitar players, Emma Rush and Michael Kolk, share a concert to perform virtuosic music for classical guitar. This concert is part of the first Nelson Guitar Festival, a two-day celebration of the classical guitar!
Family Square Dance with Paul Silveria
The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture and Trail & District Arts Council TOGETHER present Family Square Dance, an experience for kids of all ages and their families to enjoy together. The show is on Sunday, March 29 at 3 pm at the Rossland Miners Hall as part of the TECK Family Series.
Learn the difference between Do Si Do and Weave the Ring, Promenade and Swing as you Roll Away To A Half Sashay. Our caller, musician Paul Silveria, will call the moves to high-energy live music as you get instruction, and a bit of history along the way, for a fun, welcoming, and beginner friendly afternoon!

Paul Silveria is a unique performer with a varied skill set - you can find him calling square dances, leading jams, teaching banjo, sharing his “crankies” and performing both traditional tunes and original songs. As a community based artist, Paul loves telling stories, sharing skills, and bringing people together and has more than a decade of experience working with children and school groups of all ages.

PIQSIQ with Oh Pray Tell - Double Bill
The Trail & District Arts Council presents Inuit style throat singers PIQSIQ at The Bailey Theatre on Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 pm as part of the Performing Arts Trail series. They will be joined in the double bill by Oh Pray Tell who are gospel, rhythm & blues, roots music and folk storytelling singers.
With a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty, sisters Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay come together to create an Inuit style throat singing duo, PIQSIQ. They perform ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions with improvisational looping. In Inuktitut, a “piqsiq” is a storm where the snow seems as if it is falling back up towards the sky.
PIQSIQ have toured internationally and performed at the NONAM (North American Native Museum in Zurich), The German American Centre in Stuttgart, Germany, the Linden Museum and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC as part of the Library of Congress concert series. They also performed for the High Commission to Canada in London for a tribute concert alongside Susan Aglukark.
They have recorded a television special for APTN’s “Indigenous Day Live Winter Solstice”
and for the Chan Centre for the Arts Dot Com Series. And PIQSIQ’s music has been licensed for several films including “Food for the Rest of Us”, directed by Caroline Cox and produced by Tiffany Ayalik, and “The Magnitude of All Things”, directed by Jennifer Abbot.
They even partnered with Coloma Guitars in Vancouver to create a one-of-a-kind instrument made of an entire caribou antler mount with a baleen whale bow.
Their 2020 album “Taaqtuq Ubluriaq: Dark Star” charted for several months nationally in the top 30 for Electronic and National categories and one of the songs off the album, “Arctic Hallows”, was listed by CBC as one of the top 100 songs of 2020.

Oh Pray Tell is Betty Supple, Sally Titasey and Shayna Jones whose three part harmonies grounded in banjo and stomp-clap-cajon rhythms carry poetry, stories and spoken word. They offer up an original, soulful sound influenced by gospel, rhythm & blues, roots music and folk story-telling. Shayna is a recent and rejoiced addition to the group.
Oh Pray tell is based in British Columbia, Turtle Island — Sally and Shayna on Sinixt Territory and Betty moving consistently between territories, most often landing in that of the Sinixt, Haudenosaunee, Anishnaabe, Huron Wendat, Quw’utsun and Snuneymuxw Peoples.

Winter Wilson live at Taghum Hall
UK folk duo and recording artists Winter Wilson (Kip Winter and Dave Wilson) have entranced audiences worldwide over more than 20 years and 11 albums. They've completed multiple tours of Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, as well as the UK and Europe. Kip plays flute, piano, accordion, guitar, and brings “a voice to die for” (John Roffee, Maverick Magazine) to the duo; Dave, contributing vocals, guitar, and banjo, is widely recognized as one of the UK’s best contemporary folk and blues songwriters. Kip and Dave present their music with passion, and between songs offer insights into life on the road told with natural humour. This is a Taghum Hall Presents event.
Nelson Communiy Band Spring Concert
May 27th Spring Concert will include a great variety of music, from a 5 movement concerto to selections from Pirates of the Caribbean, from a rousing march to an odd mis-stepped 11/8 number, and much in between!
The 30 piece band is very pleased to be featuring the premiers of Keith Todd’s latest composition! This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity!
The concert will be at 7:30 pm, doors open at 7:00. Tickets are $15, with youth 18 and under free, sold at the door at 611 Fifth St., The First Baptist Church. Cash only, thank you.
