The Mosquitos – New Absurdist Theatre

"Things are changing rather quickly. We no longer share a reality".

A group of old friends get together for a dinner party, while rumours of an unimaginable change swirl around them. How will they face total transformation?

An absurd comedy of manners with an existential heart, The Mosquitos is original new theatre written and directed by Slocan Valley playwright Marya Folinsbee. With equal parts humour and pathos, The Mosquitos reconsiders our place in the ecosystem, asking;
How do we create a coherent life together when we understand the world so differently?

A meditation on politics, relationships, (mis)information and the role of art in making meaning, The Mosquitos is inspired by absurdist classics like Eugene Ionesco's Rhinoceros and Samuel Beckett's Happy Days (and, by life in these times).

This world premiere features a talented ensemble of local performers and artistic team:

Written and Directed by Marya Folinsbee

Featuring Performances by:
Emily Ryan
Kozmo Sammartino
Roger Carter
Patricia McLaughlin
Karmelle Spence-Sing

The Red Thread (And Other Mingled Yarns)

A One-Woman Show
Written and Performed by Ellie Reynolds
Ellie is excited to return to the Langham Theatre with her third solo show 'The Red Thread (And Other Mingled Yarns)' She has performed her first two shows 'Matchmaker on the Roof', and 'The Way They Came' and Kaslo has always shown up and been a fantastically warm audience. Now it's time for the final in the trilogy!
This performance is offered to the lovely people of Kaslo on a By Donation basis, no presales - just show up and donate at the door (suggested donation $20). Here's a little bit more about the show
Ellie's third solo show picks up a red thread and unspools it, while asking the big questions: are the events of our lives somehow inevitable? Are we fated or doomed to love one person, and what is the Red Thread of Destiny that ties us to one another, and to our own past?
Three mysterious yarn-spinning goddesses of Fate aid Ellie through the labyrinthe as she wrestles with her lot in (increasingly middle) life, reminding us all how telling stories can help us understand how the threads of our lives can stretch, mingle and twist to form webs of connection across time and space.
Moving between the worlds of Greek Myth, to Shakespeare, to North London and Denver Colorado in the eighties, through to the present moment in the Kootenays - The Red Thread is an earnest, yet playful exploration of the role of Fate in our lives and the yarns we spin to try and make sense of it all.

AUDITIONS for new original absurdist theatre: The Mosquitos

AUDITION this February for Material Theatre’s newest production, the premier of a new full-length play, The Mosquitos, written by Marya Folinsbee.

In The Mosquitos, a group of old friends get together for a dinner party while around them, the human world seems to be enduring an inexplicable, bizarre and total transformation. Will this be their last dinner together as human beings? Inspired by 20th century absurdists like Eugene Ionesco and Samuel Beckett, The Mosquitos asks: "how do we share the world when we no longer share a reality?”.

We’ll be casting up to 14 parts. Rehearsals start in March 2025 with production week in the first and second weeks of June. Rehearsals will take place in Nelson and/or the Slocan Valley, based on the best arrangements for cast and crew. BOOM - The Music, Culture, and Events of the Baby Boom Generation

Trail Arts Council presents “BOOM” A Kidoons and WYRD Production, in association with The 20K Collective. Written, Directed and Performed by Rick Miller.

“BOOM (1945-1969): The Music, Culture, and Events of the Baby Boom Generation” will play at The Bailey Theatre on Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30 pm, as part of the Performing Arts Trail series in The Bailey Theatre. A daring mix of live music and visual effects this is a show full of emotion, storytelling and sensory experience.

Part 1 of the BOOM Trilogy features the music, culture, and events of the Baby Boom Generation from 1945 to 1969. An explosive solo performance, “BOOM” takes us through 25 turbulent years, and gives voice to over a 100 influential politicians, activists and musicians. It's a mind-blowing experience for audiences of all generations.

BOOM chronologically documents the period from the first atomic bomb in 1945 all the way to the Apollo 11 landing on the moon in 1969. These two iconic moments span one of the most tumultuous times in modern history, as a generation with incredible influence came of age alongside advances in technology and communication.

Rick Miller performs all the characters, and 25 moment-defining songs, in a stunningly staged production that blends cutting-edge multimedia, and tour-de-force storytelling. Experience the global events as they unfold: the Cold War, McCarthyism, Beatlemania, JFK, MLK, Vietnam... Radio Free Kaslo, December 6, 2024

I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.

Pablo Picasso

There's no doubt that theatre — whether a West End London musical, a performance of Hamlet at Stratford, or a one-act comedy performed by a plucky group of amateurs in a small-town auditorium — can be transformative.

On today's show I sit down with actor and director Lynn van Deursen, who has blessed the tiny mountain village of Kaslo with many outstanding theatrical moments over the years. We talk about her effort to put together a community theatre group, the recent plays staged at Kaslo's venerable Langham Theatre, and chat about Lynn's take on theatre generally, and Kaslo community theatre in particular.

If you like your entertainment live and in person, you don't have to be a Kaslo resident to enjoy our conversation!

Radio Free Kaslo, October 18, 2024

Move over, Portlandia. Here comes A Beginner's Guide to Kaslovia, featuring the ridiculously gifted (underscore ridiculously) — and extremely funny —  Lucas Myers.

That's right, Myers is back, ready to poke good-natured fun at the quirks and characters that make Kaslo, shall we say, unique!

After a considerable hiatus, he returns to Kaslo's venerable Langham Theatre for three-day run —  Friday October 18 through Sunday, October 20th — with a one-man show that anyone who frequents, let alone lives in, Kaslo won't want to miss.

Radio Free Kaslo host Randy Morse talks with Myers about the upcoming show, and much more on this highly entertaining 30-minute podcast.
