The year was 2002…Mario Lemieux led Canada to gold at the Salt Lake City Olympics, Nickleback, Avril Lavigne and Nelly were at the top of the charts, and the first winter issue of a little local magazine called Kootenay Mountain Culture was available around town at 34 pages in length. Nineteen and a half years later, the local magazine — with a page count normally well above 100 — has made it through the global collapse of the print media industry, Donald Trump and a pandemic.
Editor Vince Hempsall has been at the helm for the past seven years, as well as running his own company – WhoaNow Media.
Hempsall stopped by Kootenay Morning on May 17 to fill us in on what the latest issue looks like.
