Kootenay Co-op Radio has launched a new interactive election page at kootenaycoopradio.com/election — a one-stop hub for meeting the candidates running in your community ahead of the October 17 municipal election. Click through the map to find your municipality or electoral area, see who’s running, and read candidates’ own words on the issues that matter most.

Alongside the new page, KCR is producing on-air and online programming to keep communities informed through election day. All three Nelson mayoral candidates and all 14 Nelson council candidates will be invited for interviews on Kootenay Morning, which airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8 to 9 am — brought to you by the Kootenay Morning team. The interviews will also be posted to the election page as they’re completed, so you can listen anytime.

Local Journalism Initiative reporters Heather Austin and Jaime Frederick will be interviewing mayoral candidates in Castlegar, Trail and Kaslo.

Mayor and council candidates in other communities, along with candidates for RDCK Area Director, have been invited to respond to a written questionnaire, and their answers will be posted to the election page as they come in.

In Nelson, two confirmed public forums will give residents a chance to hear directly from candidates: the Climate Hub Forum on Monday, October 5th at 7 pm at the United Church – youtube.com/@westkootenayclimatehub – and the Canadian Federation of University Women’s Forum on Wednesday, October 7th at 7 pm at the Wildflower School gym (Central School). Kootenay Co-op Radio plans to cover both.

As always, CRTC rules require Kootenay Co-op Radio to provide equitable coverage to all candidates.

And once the municipal votes are counted, stay tuned — the provincial election follows just a week later, and KCR will have coverage of that too. More details to come.

Find the new election page at kootenaycoopradio.com/election, and catch KCR on your radio dial at 93.5 FM in Nelson, 96.5 in Crawford Bay, 107.5 in New Denver, and 101.5 in South Slocan — or streaming live at kootenaycoopradio.com.
