Critical Mass Bicycle Ride Nelson
September 29, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Free

Meet at Railway Station at 5:00 pm. Ride departs at 5:30 pm sharp. Critical Mass rides are a form of direct action in which people ride bicycles as a group together for safety in numbers. We’re riding up the newly upgraded highway along the North Shore to Six Mile and back. Ride ends at Lakeside Park for a BBQ in Rotary Shelter (bring food to BBQ).
Critical Mass rides highlight the masses of people who want to ride their bikes on roads but don’t feel safe doing so. They are a call to action to councils, governments and road planners to properly and thoughtfully design for the safety of all road users, and not prioritizing motor traffic above all else.
These events are be viewed as “celebrations” and spontaneous gatherings, and not as protests or organized demonstrations allowing the Critical Mass ride to occur without advance notification of local police.
Traditionally held on the last Friday of each month, Critical Mass rides started in San Fransisco in 1992. Now more than 300 cities around the world host rides, including Nelson.
