Sinixt Canoe Journey at Lakeside Park

Sinixt paddlers will launch in Kaslo on June 27, camping in Garland Bay and Kokanee Creek, and arrive at Lakeside Park in Nelson on July 1st.
10am: Watch the landing of the dugout and sturgeon-nosed canoes as the paddlers arrive on the beach at Lakeside Park at the end of their journey from Kaslo.
10:45am: Join a community circle dance around the big drum
Throughout the day, the community is invited to visit the Sinixt tent and view artefacts, educational materials, and see a traditional salmon cooking pit.
This Sinixt Canoe Journey is an Indigenous‑led cultural and spiritual undertaking that reconnects Sinixt paddlers, artists, and youth with their traditional territory along the Kootenay Lake from Kaslo to Nelson. The Nelson stop offers a rare and meaningful opportunity for our community to engage directly with Sinixt culture, deepen understanding of place, and build respectful relationships through shared ceremony and celebration.
The journey creates space to return to ancestral waters, strengthen cultural practices, and connect to land that is central to identity, memory, and responsibility. For local residents, this event offers accessible, place‑based opportunities to learn from Sinixt knowledge holders and artists, fostering cross‑cultural understanding, respect, and reconciliation.
